New Computer?
« on: December 02, 2014, 01:31:10 PM »
I need to replace my home desktop which is an old Dell Inspiron. For any of you tech guys I'm still open but have looked at the Dell XPS but also considering a Mac. My basic needs are 4-8GB i5-i7 Intel, CD/DVD drive, ect. I have never owned a Mac and have no experience with Windows 8. Thoughts???

Mac is Unix based since the release of OSX and are quite spendy, as I'm sure you're aware. I'm not a Windows advocate simply because I don't care to work with one arm tied behind my back. I won't even get into the whole "virus" thing Windows are prone to.

If you're considering Linux, Ubuntu has partnered with several PC manufacturers, including Dell, so that they come pre-loaded from the factory. See this link for options --> http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/desktop/

There is an open source office suite called LibreOffice that plays well with MS Office Suite.

Go Linux     (just my $.02 since you asked)

One more thing to note is that IBM recently sold their x86 division to Lenovo. This means you'll get IBM level quality at a Lenovo price.

Thanks for the info, I will check into those options as well. This is really more for my kids than me, they are 10 & 13 and I want to have something for them to work/learn on.

I've been moving from Dell to Lonovo here at the office, but I buy ASUS at home. I like everyone has had issues with windows, but it is the norm.

However, I use a bootable linux as a recovery OS.  When I have drives go out at work, I boot with Knoppix to access the damaged drive.

Linux to the rescue  :kick:

Additionally, when the Windows Administrator password is lost or forgotten, a Linux bootable password reset utility allows you to reset it with ease.
